Order a Free Credit Report: Your credit report - a type of consumer report - contains information about where you work, live, how you pay your bills, and may show whether you have filed for bankruptcy or had a monetary judgment against you. Because businesses use this information to evaluate your applications for credit, insurance, employment, and other purposes allowed by the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), it is important that the information in your report is complete and accurate.
Consumers are now able to obtain one free credit report per year from each of the three nationwide consumer credit reporting companies--Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian. You can request a report from each agency at the same time, or stagger your requests over a 12-month period. Electrus Federal Credit Union reports your credit history to Equifax. Equifax is the most commonly used credit reporting agency in Minnesota.
You can order your free reports online at www.annualcreditreport.com. You can also request your reports by phone by calling tollfree 1-877-322-8228. The Federal Trade Commission has made additional information about the importance of reviewing your credit as well as the process of doing so available at http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/credit/freereports.htm.
Unsolicited Mail, Telemarketing and E-mail: Tired of having your mailbox crammed with unsolicited mail, including pre-approved credit card applications? Fed up with getting telemarketing calls just as you’re sitting down to dinner? Fuming that your e-mail inbox is chock-full of unsolicited advertising? The good news is that you can cut down on the number of unsolicited mailings, calls and e-mails you receive by learning where to go to "opt out." You can learn more about this at www.optoutprescreen.com.
E-mail Fraud: Anyone using the Internet should be aware of phishing, also referred to as spoofing. Phishing is when someone sends out a large group of e-mails falsely claiming to be an established, legitamte business in an attempt to scam the receiver into surrendering provate information that could be used for identity theft. The e-mail directs the receiver to visit a web site where they are asked to update personal information, such as account usernames and passwords, as well as credit card, social security, and financial institution account numbers. The web site, however, is bogus and set up only to steal the receiver's information.
Electrus would NEVER e-mail or phone you requesting that you verify information we already have on file. It is important to NEVER give any credit card, financial institution, or social security information to anyone who has contacted you over the telephone or Internet. If this happens you should get in touch with that company using your normal contact means and let them know someone saying they are from that company is asking for you for personal information. When you initiate contact with a company, make sure you are comfortable with the company and the representative before providing any personal information.
If you ever receive a suspicious e-mail or phone call from someone claiming to be from Electrus, please contact us at 800-252-4239.
